Cowboy Bill Gets a Great Review… in New Jersey?

Last month, the Bringing the Funny tour 2008 had stops in Providence, RI and Princeton, New Jersey.   A lot of people wonder how it goes in the Northeast for Bill…here is what one critic thought of it.

Cowboy Bill Martin's cerebral comedy has universal appeal

By ED CONDRAN • Correspondent • August 30, 2008

Misdirection is an effective comedic tool. Even before you see Cowboy Bill Martin, its hard not to think that you're in for a night of Southwestern humor. The Dallas-based comic's name exudes that down-home vibe. And then there is the cowboy hat and an accent not quite as thick as Lone Star barbecue sauce, but after he speaks you sense that he spends his Sundays rooting for Tony Romo and company.

However, Martin's comedy isn't very different from your average New York City comic.

"I go through the same thing as everybody else," Martin said. "People do come up to me after shows in the Northeastern part of the country and say, "Thanks, I didn't expect you to be the way you are.' But they mean that in a good way. It's not like I'm from another planet. I know when you usually see guys dressed like me on a stage in New Jersey; they usually have a guitar strapped on them."

Tragedy inspired Martin's comedy 10 years ago. While going through a divorce, the former advertising writer's company was bought out. While looking for a new job, he learned that his grandmother was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

"I read that a man who goes through a divorce is five times more likely to kill himself than a married man," Martin said.  He was inspired to write the book "Life Under the Neon Moon: Now That She's Gone and Took the Dog With Her."  "It was one of the best things I did," Martin said. "I was told the book read like stand-up and I tried stand-up and it was a natural fit for me."

Martin's comedy is deep, cerebral and provocative.

"People look at me and think I'm going to tell (flatulence) jokes," Martin said. "When a comic wears a cowboy hat, people expect the "Blue Collar Comedy' thing. That's not what I'm about."

Much of Martin's material is inspired by his life. He recently had a vasectomy.  "The reason is because I have children that are 22, 20 and 3," Martin said.
Martin, who will perform tonight and tomorrow at Catch a Rising Star in Princeton, recently went through his second divorce.  "She's about to get remarried," Martin said. "Good for her."

Don't expect Martin to ever tie the knot again.  "When I think about love, my kids can fill that void," Martin said. "I love them very much. As far as the physical thing goes, well, there's always a cocktail waitress out there with low self-esteem."

"Nutcracker" is the name of Martin's forthcoming disc. Much of the disc, including the title, has been inspired by his vasectomy. During recent sets, Martin has waxed about the procedure for as long as 18 minutes.

"A friend of mine told me to get it done," Martin said. "He said there was no pain. He lied. For two days it feels like there is a midget down there hitting the speed bags. I've talked about it a lot because people can connect to it. I don't have look far to find funny things to talk about. Everyday there is always something funny and I just take that to the stage."

My Two Cents: “Sometimes HOPE is all you have”

Well the table has been set.  The players are all in place.   This year’s presidential election is all ready to go.  And it is so easy to tell them apart.  In this corner is Obama and Biden; the young upstart and the passionate old guy who plan on bringing change to Washington.  The other side has a completely different formula.  They have McCain and Palin; the passionate old guy and the young upstart and they plan of bringing to Washington a change.

Both tickets offer something historic after all, I don’t know if you heard yet but one is black and one is a woman.  And by the way, if you didn’t know that, welcome out of the coma.

Each side says it’s the other one’s fault that the country is going to hell in a hand basket.  Each side guarantees to get us out of it.  And neither side is really telling us how they are going to do that.

But as we get closer and closer to the election, the one thing that has bothered me the most is this mocking of HOPE.   And it deserves better.

Sometimes hope is all you have.  It’s what can carry you through the day even when you lose your job and the bills are piling up.  Or when you have been diagnosed with a terrible disease and the doctor tells you your time is up.  Or when the Texas Rangers break from Spring Training and you think, “this year, our chances are going up!”

But HOPE is one of those things that we should all have; no matter what party you belong to.  And for those of you out there that may be going through some tuff times right now in your life, you just remember, if you’ve been knocked down, look up.  Because if you can look up, you can get up.  And there are better days to come!

Take care of yourself and remember, the world owes you nothing…but you can show what they are missing!
